Eichler homes are like islands—self-contained on their lots, relying on gardens to ground them to the land. Their open horizontality creates a continuity between interior and exterior. Eichler left his homes unlandscaped so that residents could shape their own gardens, continuing the interiors into outdoor rooms that feel intimate and familiar.

At the entry, the landscape softens and quiets the house and connects it to the earth. The plantings lend privacy, character and texture to a structure that might otherwise feel exposed in its suburban setting. The entry bay tucks the house inward, creating a subtle separation from the street. Its calmness comes from the materials: concrete treads that create quiet and complement Eichler’s architecture. The steps lead through native buckwheats and Mediterranean lavender cotton, with silver acacia (Acacia podalyriifolia), abuzz with aliveness.

In the backyard, basalt pavers and a handmade natural-clay brick patio form the outdoor spaces. The bricks, turned upside down to reveal their imperfection mirror the windows. At the center of the patio, the stucco counter of the outdoor kitchen is surrounded by layered plantings. We preserved the existing fig, Meyer lemon, and redwood trees, adding grasses and perennials—yarrow, Gaura lindheimeri (‘White Heron’), Correa alba (‘Bronze Select’), Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam’, Anemone sylvestris, and Sanguisorba officinalis—and introduced a small olive grove to cast shade for summer meals.`
