Mud, slope, slop, mud slosh, redwoods, steps. This site had all the challenges.

The garden stretches far behind the house, tucked away like a secret the homeowners had inherited. A space to uncover slowly. When we began, we searched for sun—small openings of morning light, moments of afternoon glow. These became the foundation for terraces, each one placed in response to what the site allowed.

Our clients asked for something simple: pleasure. The enjoyment of being outside, observation and stillness. A retreat—from the city but not entirely removed.

This became, in some ways, a paean to the redwood forest. Tree ferns, wet soil, woodland. The slope held, but never fully resolved—always offering another path, another place to be.
